2016 AB Open Handball Results

The 2016 Alberta Open was a huge success this year, held for the first, and not last, time at the Thorncliffe Courts. There were 36 entries, complete with some brand new divisions.

The Women's division saw 6 new players, playing a round robin for singles, and 3 teams in the doubles. These players got stronger throughout the events, as many of them play predominantly one wall. The competition was fierce, yet fair. It was interesting to see some of the new men referee their wives in the women's division, and luckily there were few controversial calls.

The singles were won bMaria Fitzgeraldand the runner up was Krista Gummer.

The doubles saw Maria and Kelly Kissner win and Kelly and Kaitlin Gummer were the runners up, and third place was Launie Rakochey and Kim Warcop. But all of the women were winners - a photo of 5 of them (missing KimWarcop)

The new men's division have 4 newcomers - Shawn Browne, David Gummer, David Bender and Jud Niven. Their play was equally impressive as their female counterparts, with Shawn emerging as the singles winner.

The AHA executive had their meeting Friday night, in the bar(where else?) with Rob Rakochey leading the agenda and doing 96% of the talking. Rob was so focussed in the discussion he did not notice that someone placed a half eaten tuna-meatball sub on his shoulder.  The aroma eventually lead to the discovery of the sub.  After consumption of said sub, Rob left the sub bag on his shoulder in hope of a new sub appearing.

The singles were a small but highly skilled group. Rory Rakochey fell to the mix of power and finesse of Samantha England. Slammin Sammy then took a lesson from her old college mate Shane Vitamix Vigen. On the other side of the draw, eastern master Jason Johns gave John Jenkins a run for his money, but came up a few points short. In the final, the Magic Man disappeared, and Shane retained the Alberta Open Title.

IN the Masters division, Russ Glasgow slayed the field, ending the finals over Herb Martin. Some of the other highlights were seen in the consolation side where Bill McGrath won two hard fought 3 match games, first over Carter Rakochey, and then the final over Paul Klotz - the battles were epic.

The Masters Doubles were won my Russ Glasgow and Matt O'Keefe, who filled in for Rob Rakochey when he pulled up lame in the singles allegedly popping some muscle in his rear regions while playing Herb Martin. Herbclaims not to have been near Rob while he incurred that injury, but was seen smuggling a small bat from the courts afterwards. The surprise of this event was the play of Myra Koval and \Carter Rakochey who came in secondplace.
